Why 30 Plants a Week? The Science

The number 30 is not a marketing slogan. It comes from real research on the gut microbiome, the community of trillions of bacteria living in your digestive tract. Here is where the goal comes from and why variety matters more than any single superfood.

Where the number comes from

In 2018, researchers published the American Gut Project, one of the largest studies of the human microbiome, in the journal mSystems. They collected diet and stool samples from thousands of people and looked at what predicted a more diverse gut.

What the study found

The clearest signal was plant variety. People who ate more than 30 different types of plants a week had more diverse gut microbiomes than people who ate 10 or fewer. Not more total food, not one perfect vegetable, but a wider range of different plants. That single finding is where the 30-plant goal comes from.

What microbiome diversity supports

A more diverse gut microbiome is linked with better digestion, a stronger gut lining, and lower inflammation. The bacteria in your gut are not passive. They do work for you, and a more varied community tends to be a more resilient one. Researchers are still learning the full picture, but plant diversity keeps showing up as one of the strongest things you can influence with your fork.

How variety feeds different bacteria

Different plants contain different fibers and compounds, and different bacteria feed on different ones. When you eat a narrow diet, you feed a narrow set of bacteria. When you eat a wide variety, you feed a wider community. Your gut bacteria ferment these fibers into short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, which nourish the cells lining your colon and help keep inflammation in check. More variety in equals more variety out.

How to reach 30 without overhauling your diet

Thirty sounds like a lot until you count. A single salad can have six or seven plants. A pot of soup with beans, vegetables, and herbs can have ten. Add a handful of nuts, a piece of fruit, some oats, and a few spices, and the number climbs fast. You are probably closer than you think. Tracking it is the easiest way to find the gaps and fill them.
